COLOGNE HOSTS WORLD AZERIS CONGRESS

BAKU, FEBRUARY 27 (RIA NOVOSTI CORRESPONDENT GERAI DADASHEV) - The seventh convention of the World Azerbaijanis Congress is to open here today, reports the press center of Azerbaijan's state committee for dealing with compatriots abroad.

Plans are in place to discuss the results of Iranian parliamentary elections; by the way, Azeri nationals account for an estimated 50 percent of Iran's 70-million population. The delegates will also examine the Armenian-Azeri conflict over Nagorny Karabakh, as well as ways of ensuring the Azeri diaspora's more effective work and accomplishing its objectives, Congress board member Yegyana Amiraslanova noted.

Convention delegates are to study the possibility of establishing a national fund, which would be used to solve the problems of Azerbaijan.

More than 600 people from different countries of the world, including Russia, are to attend the convention, Amiraslanova stressed.

The world's Azeri diaspora is divided into two organizations, which are both called the world Azerbaijanis congress.

Meanwhile the alternative world Azerbaijanis congress held its seventh convention in Strasbourg January 30 - February 1, 2004.
