MOSCOW, FEBRUARY 26 (RIA NOVOSTI) - A gas tank blast killed seventeen or more in Chita, provincial center in the Trans-Baikalia country, Siberia's south, this morning. Another eighteen were injured, reports the federal Ministry for Emergency and Calamity Relief.

Fifteen survivors are in city hospitals, seven of them in grave condition, the others in medium grave condition. Three went home after first aid.

A 50 liter kitchen stove gas tank blew up to make another three blast, too. One tank stayed unscathed. That, and fragments of the other four were found under the debris.

The brick restaurant, a wing of a five-storey apartment house, was smashed. The house survived. A blast wave broke to smithereens the windows of several houses next door.

More than 160 ministry rescuers, many of them with trained dogs, are clearing off the debris in search for bodies and survivors. The search-and-rescue crew has necessary gadgetry and machines.

Detection is on. The federal top prosecutor's office has launched proceedings on fatal criminal negligence.
