KHABAROVSK, FEBRUARY 26, 2004. (RIA NOVOSTI). During his meeting with commander of the Pacific Fleet, vice-admiral Viktor Fyodorov in Khabarovsk (the territorial centre in the Far East) Russian President Vladimir Putin declared the resolution to strengthen the Pacific Fleet.

Replying to the apprehensions of Fyodorov concerning additional reductions in the fleet, the President promised that no plans would be made to curtail the fleet beyond the limits of existing understandings. "On the contrary, the Pacific Fleet should be strong. It concerns both the base and submarines," he said.

Putin and Fyodorov also discussed the development of the system of the submarine squadron base in Kamchatka.

The President said this issue should be solved together with the creation of social conditions for sailors.
