STATE SPORTS COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN WANTS TO INTRODUCE QUOTAS FOR FOREIGN LEGIONARIES

MOSCOW, February 25 (RIA Novosti) - The status of the State Sports Committee is not enough to pursue a full-fledged policy in sports, former hockey player Vyacheslav Fetisov, chairman of the Committee, told a Wednesday press conference.

"To resolve the problems of making the nation healthier, correcting the demographic situation, developing both mass and professional sports, we need a higher status," Mr. Fetisov said.

He also touched upon the issue of limiting the number of foreign legionaries playing in Russian soccer, hockey and basketball championships.

In Fetisov's opinion, it's necessary to introduce full control over Russian clubs as regards buying foreign players.

"Foreign soccer players who take leading positions in Russian teams do not give young Russian players an opportunity to grow in professional sense," Mr. Fetisov is convinced.
