KAZAN, February 25, 2004. (RIA Novosti correspondent Alexander Gavrilenko) - According to Russian Deputy Transportation Minister Oleg Skvortsov, 2,867.9 kilometers of new highways were put into commission in Russia in 2003. In addition, 21,000 kilometers of highways were repaired.

The most important highways, belonging to international transport corridors, were rapidly modernized, Mr. Skvortsov said.

However, the plan on the building and repairs of regional highways was fulfilled only by 95.4 percent, he noted. In his words, the main reason for this was the reduction of incomes of regional road funds in connection with changes in the tax legislation.
