    ACCORDING TO RUSSIAN DEFENSE MINISTRY, RUSSIAN MILITARY PLANING WILL TAKE INTO ACCOUNT NATIONAL SECURITY NEEDS

    MOSCOW, February, 2004. (RIA Novosti) -- Russian Defense Minister Sergey Ivanov stated that military planning in Russia would be built on the basis of real national security requirements.

    While speaking at the reception to honor veteran military commanders on the occasion of the Fatherland Defender's Day, which is celebrated in Russia on 23 February, the minister stated: "Presently the Russian armed forces after a lengthy period of restructuring reach the qualitatively new stage of their development. It is characterized by the principle statement that from now on the military planning should be based on real requirements to ensure national security." Ivanov stated: "All essential elements of the contemporary military construction process are aimed at achievement of the major objective: to create the Armed forces staffed with well-trained personnel, equipped with modern armaments and military equipment, capable to guarantee protection of the sovereignty, territorial integrity and other vital Russian interests."
