RIGA, FEBRUARY 20, RIA NOVOSTI - Books on Russian history-gifts from Russia-can be used in secondary schools with Russian for tuition language, announced Latvia's Education and Research Ministry. However outdated from the point of teaching methods and fact selection and presentation alike, the books will do as additional reading, Evija Papule, ministerial spokeswoman, said to the media.

Educational authorities previously meant to give the whole batch back to the Russian Embassy as the content of the books was allegedly incompatible with Latvia's dominating ideology-which made the local Russian-language press harshly assume official attempts to introduce censorship.

The embassy had given schools approximately four thousand school study books, including 68 on history.
