A rally numbering up to several thousand people, organized by the Our Adjaria movement demanded that Aslan Abashidze resign. It started in the morning. Meanwhile, Abashidze's supporters gathered near the building of the Batumi opera and ballet theater near the autonomy head's residence.
According to the Novosti-Georgia news agency, Walter Schwimmer, despite the aggravation of the situation, arrived Friday morning in Batumi in the framework of a four-day visit to Georgia. Aslan Abashidze met him at Batumi airport. They held a conference in the afternoon in the Adjar leader's residence.
Then Scwimmer headed for the office of the Our Adjaria movement. After Scwimmer's meeting with opposition members, several thousand representatives of the opposition, and around one thousand Aslan Abashidze's supporters gathered near the office building. The latter tried to oust Our Adjaria's representatives from the adjacent territory.
Clashes began between the sides. The police are trying to create a corridor between them.
It was planned that the opposition will discuss the issue of preparing and holding elections to the Georgian parliament on March 28 on Adjar territory, as well as issues of human rights violations there.
