SUSPECTED ASSASSINS OF CHECHEN SEPARATIST LEADER HANDED OVER TO QATAR

CAIRO, February 18th, 2004 (RIA Novosti correspondent Igor Kuznetsov) -- The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has handed over to Qatar the suspects in organising the assassination of one of the leaders of Chechen separatists Zelimkhan Yandarbiyev, the Arab paper Al Sharq Al-Awsat wrote in its Wednesday issue.

According to informed sources in Doha, the capital of Qatar, two European-looking suspects were apprehended in the city of Dubai (UAE) where they fled to from Qatar after the assassination attempt organised on February 13.

The spokesmen for the Qatar authorities neither confirmed nor refuted these reports.

On February 13, an explosive device planted into a Toyota Landcruiser car went off. As a result of the explosion, two people were killed, including Yandarbiyev's son-in-law, and Yandarbiyev himself was mortally wounded and died in hospital on the same day. Yandarbiyev had lived in Doha over the past three years.
