HANOI, February 17, 2004. (RIA Novosti correspondent Thu Huong). Russia is interested in the implementation of big Russian-Vietnamese economic projects, Russian Vice-Premier Viktor Khristenko, who is on a two-day working visit in Hanoi, said to journalists.

"We are interested in Russia's active participation in big economic projects of Vietnam," he said summing up the results of the session of the Russian-Vietnamese inter-governmental commission. According to him, this primarily concerns the oil and gas sector where Russia intends not only to boost the activity of Vietsovpetro joint venture but also take part in developing new deposits in Vietnam.

In a RIA Novosti interview the Vice-Premier described cooperation in energy sphere as "a highly interesting project".

Vietsovpetro is the biggest Russian -Vietnamese joint venture. Over 2003 it extracted 13.1 million tonnes of oil which accounts for 75 percent of the total oil output in Vietnam.

Russian organisations are taking part in many energy projects of Vietnam. The bulk of equipment at energy projects here was manufactured in Russia.

Vietman is planning to launch within the next few years the construction of new electric power stations, the biggest of which will be Son La hydro station with the designed capacity of 2400 megawatts.
