INDUSTRIAL OUTPUT IN RUSSIA ROSE BY 7.5 % IN JANUARY

MOSCOW, February 16 (RIA Novosti) - In January 2004, the industrial output in Russia rose by 7.5 percent in comparison with January 2003.

However, it dropped by 6.4 percent over December 2003, the State Statistics Committee of the Russian Federation reported.

In the power industry, the output dropped by 1.6 percent in January, in comparison with the similar period in 2003, but it rose by 2.2 percent over last December.

In the fuel industry, the output increased by 8.2 percent in comparison with January 2003, but it slightly dropped (by 0.3 percent) over last December.

The ferrous metallurgy enterprises increased their output by 8.2 percent in January 2004 in comparison with January 2003, while in comparison with last December their output dropped by 1.5 percent. The output of the non-ferrous enterprises decreased by 2.7 percent in comparison with January 2003, and by 4.8 percent over last December.

The output of electric energy last month dropped to 91.3 billion kwh, that is, by 0.9 percent in comparison with January 2003. The country produced this January 186 million GCal of heat energy, or 2.3 percent less than in the similar period last year.

Oil output amounted to 37.3 million tons in January, that is, 10.3 percent more than in the same period last year.
