125TH BIRTH ANNIVERSARY OF HELENA ROERICH WIDELY CELEBRATED IN INDIA

NEW DLEHI, February 12, 2004. (RIA Novosti correspondent Valery Sevryukov). The 125th birth anniversary of Helena Roerich, the wife of the great artist and philosopher Nicholas Roerich and mother of two talented sons, Orientalist Yuri and artist Svyatoslav, is widely celebrated in India.

The main celebrations were held in Kalimpong where Helena Roerich moved in 1947 after the husband's death from their estate in the Himalayas and spent the last years of her life. She was involved in scientific, enlightening and public activities.

Russian Consul General in Calcutta (West Bengal) Nikolai Fedyukovich took part in the ceremony on the site of Helena Roerich's cremation at the Buddhist monastery in Kalimpong.

According to him, representatives of Darjeeling administration and local intelligentsia spoke about Helena Roerich's international fame as the creator of the Living Ethics philosophic system.

Speaking about the Roerichs' great contribution into the development of Russian-Indian friendship and mutual understanding, the participants in the event pointed out the importance to preserve and maintain the unique artistic and cultural heritage of the Roerich family.
