MOSCOW, February 12, 2004 (RIA Novosti) - In February the State Duma (lower house) might consider the initiative of the Ivanovo region's legislature to extend the presidential term from the current four to seven years, Duma Speaker Boris Gryzlov said on Thursday.

United Russia (pro-presidential party that scored a landslide victory in the parliamentary elections of December 7th, garnering 37% of votes) will not back this initiative, however, said Gryzlov.

Earlier, he also came out against extending the presidential term. "We intend to safeguard the Constitution," said Gryzlov.

The initiative of the Ivanovo legislators will be considered by a special committee for the constitutional legislation and state construction on Thursday.
