RUSSIA NOT TO BUILD UP PEACEKEEPING PRESENCE IN ABKHAZIA: DEFENSE MINISTER

MOSCOW, FEBRUARY 11 (RIA Novosti) - Russia will not increase its peacekeeping contingent in Abkhazia, vouched Sergei Ivanov, Defense Minister, as he was addressing newsmen after conference with President Mikhail Saakashvili of Georgia, currently on a visit to Moscow.

"I don't think there is any reason to build up our presence in Georgia, and I reassured President Saakashvili we would not do so," he said. Be that as it may, developments in Abkhazia, self-proclaimed republic in Georgia, still remain far from settlement - and Russian peacekeeping presence there shows that Russia cares about the Georgian situation, the minister said.
