MOSCOW, February 11 (RIA Novosti) - On Wednesday, the head of the State Duma Security Committee, Vladimir Vasilyev said members of Russia's parliament support increasing the prison sentence for terrorist activity to life imprisonment.
The State Duma deputy said that the maximum sentence for crimes covered in the article, "Terrorism," is 25 years.
Mr. Vasilyev spoke against lifting the capital punishment moratorium. "Russia has signed an international convention and according to the convention we must stop practicing capital punishment and replace it with life imprisonment," reminded Mr. Vasilyev.
Mr. Vasilyev believes that the problem deserves to be treated thoroughly and that the final decision should not be made quickly.
The head of the State Duma Security Committee reported that his committee is working on a particular amendment to the Criminal Code that stipulates that the pre-trial detention term of people accused of terrorism be prolonged to 30 days.
He opposes an initiative that would allow law enforcement bodies to detain suspects based on operative information on suspicion of terrorist activity and then notify the court.
