"The possibility of armed policemen being on flights on a contract basis is being examined," Deputy Interior Minister Alexander Chekalin said at a press conference at Domodedovo airport.
According to him, policemen are currently being trained for this duty. They are studying airplanes and the special characteristics of actions inside airplanes so that they are prepared to react to any situation.
In regards to airport security, Mr. Chekalin there was improper protection of airplanes. According to him, in certain cases, criminals have the opportunity to place foreign objects into an aircraft when it is parked.
Mr. Chekalin said the Interior Ministry and the Federal Security Service (FSB) conducted 143 checks of air security vigilance. "In 23 cases, or 17%, there was a real possibility to penetrate the airplane in a section that can be of interest to terrorists," said Mr. Chekalin.
