A squadron of Russian battleships of the Pacific Fleet, including the Guards' guided missile cruiser Varyag, capital ASW ship (guided missile frigate) Admiral Tributs and small guided-missile frigate Koreyets, arrived in Incheon from Vladivostok on an official friendly visit yesterday.
The official friendly visit under the flag of Pacific Fleet commander-in-chief, Admiral Viktor Fedorov is dedicated to the 100th anniversary of the defeat of Russian heroic ships Varyag and Koreyets in an unequal sea battle in the Russian-Japanese War (1904-1905). The two Russian ships had to fight against one heavy and five light cruisers and eight torpedo boats of Japan near the Korean port of Chemulpo.
The Varyag cruiser, which was seriously damaged and lost 122 seamen killed and wounded, and the Koreyets gunboat returned to the inner roadstead of Chemulpo port. Varyag was sunken and Koreyets exploded not to be captured by the enemy.
After the visit of the Russian battleships to Incheon, joint Russian-South Korean naval exercises on communications, manoeuvring, and rescuing distressed ships will be held on February 14.
