MOSCOW, February 11. /RIA Novosti correspondent/ -- Russia's Minister of Agriculture Alexei Gordeyev stated that if avian influenza spreads in the USA Russia will introduce stiffer restrictions on import of chicken meat from it.

He said that the Russian authorities have now introduced restrictions on the import of chicken meat from Delaware State of the USA where a case of avian influenza was recently exposed.

According to the Minister, it is not the toughest measure, since some countries have abolished completely imports of poultry meat from the United States.

Gordeyev stated that Moscow is now more concerned over the bird flu situation in Asia, in particular in China which borders on Russia. As the Minister said, tough measures are being taken in the Russian regions bordering on China: the poultry farms switch over to work in the closed regime, and additional sanitary treatment of transport and people contacting poultry is carried out. Furthermore, business trips to Asian countries have been cancelled in these regions, and people coming from there are kept in quarantine for a week.

Supplies of poultry meat to Russia from a total of 11 countries are banned. They are "the countries where bird flu is raging, and the efforts to localize it fail," the Russian Minister said.
