RUSSIAN EDUCATION GETS WORSE AS PRIVATE COLLEGES MUSHROOM, WARNS MOSCOW UNIVERSITY RECTOR

MOSCOW, FEBRUARY 9, RIA NOVOSTI - Russian higher education is getting from bad to worse. A huge number of newfangled non-government establishments are to blame, holds Victor Sadovnichy, Moscow State University Rector.

While addressing a session of the presidential council for research and high technologies today, he gave a bilious retrospect of the 1990s, with no official control of mushrooming private colleges, who are offering low-quality tuition.

Brain drain is another crying problem. It mainly concerns young researchers, and is rooted in their miserly salaries at home. Be that as it may, only few are anxious to leave Russia-a mere five per cent, say the latest opinion probes.

Mr. Sadovnichy thinks Russia ought to reverse brain drain by enticing young scholars from other post-Soviet countries.
