"The main task for preserving our scientific potential is not financing, but necessity of the results of our scientific activity," he said at the session of the Russian President's Council for science and high technologies.
It should be the basis for economic recovery, the scientist believes.
Alferov also spoke in favour of state support to large projects.
Among important directions he named development of semi-conductor electronics. "It is the engine of economy in general," he pointed out.
The similar proposal at the session was made by senior researcher at the Theoretical and Experimental Physics Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences Makism Chernodub, who has won the contest for state support to young Russian scientists. He quoted space programmes in China and the USA.
