MOSCOW, February 9, 2004. (RIA Novosti correspondent Dmitry Panovkin). Russia intends to assist the solution of Liberia's problems, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Saltanov said at the international reconstruction conference on Liberia. The conference was held in New York on February 5-6.

According to Saltanov, the progress in Liberia's settlement and formation of interim government structures give hope for the implementation of overall peaceful agreement and relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council.

"Russia is involved in international efforts on the creation of favorable conditions of Africa's stable development, for instance, within the G8 plan of actions on Africa," said the Russian Deputy Foreign Minister.

"International community should render further assistance to the Liberian national interim government in peaceful settlement and solution of problems of disarmament, demobilization and reintegration of former combatants, creation of integrated armed forces and police, restoration of state structures and holding of overall elections no later than the end of 2005," Alexander Saltanov stressed.
