Mukhtarov was on the federal and international "wanted" lists for six years for suspected masterminding and perpetrating a terror act of September 1998 in Makhachkala, republican capital. A Parkhomenko Street car blast injured more than thirty and killed presumably eighteen. The act was certainly designed to assassinate Mayor Sayid Amirov of Makhachkala. The car, with 500 kilograms of TNT, blasted a block away from his home. Two culprits were sentenced to life imprisonment.
Mukhtarov, of Kupa village, Levashi district, Daghestan, was apprehended in a hideout this morning, armed to the teeth-he had on him two automatics, a Stechkin pistol, and a stock of hand grenades, one of which he threw at policemen.
The house owner who was harbouring Mukhtarov, and the suspect's bodyguard-the latter with a rifle-were also detained in an operation of the republican special police force.
