"We shall be contributing to the Liberian internal settlement, for instance, by means of participation in the UN peacekeeping operation in Liberia, and shall be developing cooperation with that country as its stabilization advances," reads the statement.
The two-day conference on Liberia's reconstruction took place in New York on February 5-6. UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, US Secretary of State Colin Powell, French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin, head of the Liberian interim government Charles Gyude Bryant, high-ranking officials of the European Union, the Economic Community of Western Africa States, the World Bank, the International Monetary Fund, etc. participated in the conference. The Russian delegation was headed by Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Saltanov.
The conferees considered the report on priority measures on Liberia's reconstruction and means needed for these purposes. The document was drafted by the World Bank and IMF experts and representatives of non-governmental organizations.
The donor countries and organizations promised to allocate $520 million in the near future on Liberia's reconstruction after the 14-year civil war.
