GROZNY, February 6, 2004 (RIA Novosti) - Two militants have been eliminated in Chechnya when trying to plant a landmine on a road, the North Caucasus anti-terrorist HQ told RIA Novosti.

"Two militants were spotted when trying to plant an explosive device on the Prigorodnoye-Gikalovsky (Grozny district) section of the road." When the police tried to detain them, they made an attempt to escape and opened fire.

"One bandit was eliminated by the return fire. An explosive device based on an artillery shell was found at the site of the clash along with two Makarov pistols, ammunition for them and a plan of the road section where the landmine was to be placed," added RIA Novosti's source. According to the source, no documents identifying the bandits were found.

A spokesman for the HQs said that the other militant sustained grave wounds and was delivered to a local hospital where he died.

Efforts are under way to identify the bandits.
