HEAVY SNOWFALLS ON KAMCHATKA

PETROPAVLOVSK-KAMCHATSKY, February 6, 2004. (RIA Novosti) - Heavy snowfalls since Friday morning have disturbed the air traffic in Petropavlovsk- Kamchatsky (the administrative centre of the Kamchatka region on the peninsula of the same name in the Russian Far East), the local airport's authorities reported.

The technical services of the airport are cleaning the runways. According to the weather forecasters, only this night the heavy fall of snow accounted for 6o percent of the month's norm. The snow height has reached 60-70 centimetres.

Difficulties have arisen also with road traffic in the regional centre. The snow removal machines do not cope with the arisen situation.

The possibility of snow avalanches has increased immensely in the mountainous territories of the region.

According to weather forecasters, bad weather will last for one more day. Then the cyclone will move towards the Aleutian Islands. The storm warning for all kinds of services is still in force.
