TWO MILITANTS AND TERRORISTS' BASE ELIMINATED IN CHECHNYA

GROZNY, February 4, 2004. (RIA Novosti) -- Two militants were killed in the course of an armed clash in Chechnya, a spokesman for the regional operational headquarters for controlling the antiterrorist operation in the North Caucasus told RIA Novosti.

According to the headquarters' data, on Tuesday, law enforcers discovered a militants' base in the Shelkovsky district of Chechnya. The armaments, which they withdrew from this camp included grenades, manual anti-tank grenade launcher, rounds to it, a great amount of cartridges of various gauges and military uniforms, the spokesman for the headquarters said.

"An ambush was laid in the area of the base. At night two militants tried to penetrate inside the camp. Upon the request to surrender the members of the bandit group rendered armed resistance and were killed in return fire," noted the spokesman.

At the present time other members of the group are being searched for, added the headquarters spokesman.
