KYOTO PROTOCOL: PARIS AND BERLIN PRESSING MOSCOW?

PARIS, February 3, 2004. (RIA Novosti correspondent Andrei Nizamutdinov) -- France and Germany called on Russia to ratify the Kyoto protocol.

Paris and Berlin confirm their intention to start the implementation of the Kyoto protocol and again call on Russia and other countries to follow their example, reads the joint communiquй issued on Tuesday following the meeting of the French and German environment ministers in La Baule (France).

Speaking at a press conference following the meeting, French Minister of Ecology Roselyne Bachelot came out for a campaign to persuade Russia in the necessity of the Kyoto protocol ratification.

On his part, German Minister for Environment Juergen Trittin said that Russia is economically interested in the Kyoto protocol ratification because it will boost investments needed for industrial modernization.

Meanwhile, Moscow does not refuse to join the Kyoto protocol but insists on a detailed research of consequences of its possible ratification for Russia's economy.
