MOSCOW, February 3, 2004 (RIA Novosti) - Officers of the State Drug Control Committee have thwarted an attempt to organise a new channel for delivering heroin to Moscow.

A spokesman for the information and public relations department of the Moscow regional board of the State Drug Control Committee said that the committee's officers detained a citizen of Tajikistan when he was selling drugs. They confiscated 500 grams of heroin from him.

"The investigation has established that the detainee often visited the Russian capital and, not satisfied with his profits, decided to expand his business," the spokesman said.

According to the committee, this citizen of Tajikistan is a member of the criminal group of drug traffickers. Apart from that, he acted as a link between the suppliers and small and medium dealers in Moscow.

"The circle of his clients has already been established, and now steps are being taken to check the channel of heroin deliveries to the capital," the spokesman said.
