MOSCOW, January 30th, 2004 (RIA Novosti correspondent Oleg Osipov) - The introduction of competitive court proceedings requires better work from prosecutors. Russian President Vladimir Putin said this at an extended board of the Russian Prosecutor General's Office.

"A prosecutor is responsible today for the evidence and substantiation behind the accusation," said the president.

Putin stressed that all this requires brand new efforts from prosecutors and increases the amount of work, because "a prosecutor defends the interests of many thousands of people who became victims of crimes." President Putin recalled that the "archaic" institute of additional investigation had been abolished. "We know how many debates this issue aroused and is still arousing. But competitive court proceedings now requires better prosecutor supervision," said Putin.

Vladimir Putin also attached importance to law-enforcers' co-ordination of their anti-criminal efforts in accordance with the law. "The main thing is to ensure co-ordinated work and uniform application of the law by inquest and investigative bodies," said the president.
