AZERBAIJAN GOING TO INCREASE RUSSIAN GAS PURCHASES - ILKHAM ALIEV

BAKU, JANUARY 29 (RIA NOVOSTI CORRESPONDENT GERAI DADASHEV) - Azerbaijan is going to increase Russian gas imports so as to provide all its regions with tap gas.

Azeri President Ilkham Aliev said this on Thursday when receiving OAO Gazprom vice-president Alexander Ryazanov and OOO Gazexport director general Alexander Medvedev.

The agreement on Gazprom's supplies of Russian natural gas to Azerbaijan has been effective since January 1. Gas is supplied on the basis of a long-term five-year contract.

The contract, signed in Baku on December 22, expires on December 31, 2008.

Under it, up to 4 billion cubic meters of gas will arrive in Azerbaijan annually. In 2004 the volume of gas supplied will be 2.75 billion cubic meters.
