MOSCOW, JANUARY 29 (RIA Novosti correspondent Grigori Dubovitsky) - Russia established its State Committee for Narcotic and Psychotropic Substance Control last July. Several tens of tons of drugs have been tracked down and confiscated since, Viktor Cherkesov, committee president, said to the media. More precise figures are coming up, he added.

Close on 200,000 drug-related crimes are registered in Russia every year. Moscow accounts for an approximate 10 per cent of the whole. Many more crimes remain unregistered, warned Mr. Cherkesov.

"Addicts make two thirds of all drug traffic detainees for now. It is, however, much more important to see how drugs get to Russia and travel in it, and block their channels, than to hunt mere addicts," he stressed.
