MOSCOW, January 29 (RIA Novosti correspondent Grigory Dubovitsky) - There are some 150,000 drug abusers, while as few as 30,000 of them are reported addicts. Aleksei Chuvayev, chief of the Moscow department of the State Committee for Control over Sales of Drugs and Psychotropic Substances, cited these data at an extended meeting of the department board.

According to the state committee, synthetic drugs like ecstasy, amphetamine, etc are popular in Moscow now. They are distributed through night clubs and discotheques. Mr Chuvayev reported a series of successful operations to seize the drugs. Law-enforcers, for example, put an end to the activities of 20 Moscow and St Petersburg residents who supplied synthetic drugs to Moscow's night clubs. "Law-enforcers have seized over a thousand of ecstasy pills and a large batch of amphetamine drugs from them. Two members of this criminal group worked as disk-jockeys in night clubs in Moscow and St Petersburg," said Mr Chuvayev.

He said in late 2003, state committee officers seized more than 80 kilos of drugs, including some 30 kilos of heroin. Moreover, they confiscated 360 liters of various drug liquid and eradicated more than 10 hectares of wild marihuana in Moscow.

The committee in cooperation with the Federal Security Service (FSB) conducted an operation and closed down a channel, which was used to supply heroin from Tajikistan to Russia. Five to 10 kilos of heroin are known to have been delivered to Moscow twice a month through this channel.
