NEW DELHI, JANUARY 28. /RIA NOVOSTI CORRESPONDENT VELERI SEVRYUKOV/ -- Russia and India are unanimous that the United Nations should play "the central role in world affairs, the principles of multipolarity should predominate, world order should be based on a strong legal foundation". Russian deputy foreign minister Yuri Fedotov said this on Wednesday on results of consultations he had on that day with his colleagues from the Indian foreign policy establishment.

Fedotov stressed that here Russia and India give a positive assessment of the results of the 58th session of the UN General Assembly and believe that additional efforts should be made to embody the resolutions adopted.

"The United Nations should properly react to the new challenges and threats to global strategic stability. In this sense, Russia and India support work of the group of high-level representatives set up by the UN secretary-general", said spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry.

Fedotov said that, in the course of regular political consultations, a range of topical regional problems and conflicts was also discussed, such as the situation in Iraq, the situation in the Middle East and Afghanistan.

"This multivector political dialogue is based on a strong foundation of our strategic partnership, the relations of friendship and interaction shaped between our countries and our leaders", Fedotov said.
