PACE SESSION TO BE HELD IN RUSSIAN FOR THE FIRST TIME

STRASBOURG, JANUARY 28, 2004. (RIA NOVOSTI SPECIAL CORRESPONDENT KRISTINA RODRIGES) -- The PACE secretariat officially confirmed that head of the Federation Council (the upper house of the Russian parliament) committee on international affairs, deputy PACE chairman Mikhail Margelov will hold the session in Russian on Wednesday.

The Senator reported that his speech would begin at 11.20, local time.

According to Margelov, he will first address the European MPs in English with a request to put on earflaps and then continue his speech in Russian.

In compliance with the procedures adopted in PACE, Margelov pointed out, the status of two official (English and French) and three working (German, Italian and Russian) languages is not clearly determined in the Assembly's regulations.

Russian was used in the Assembly's work only for the synchronous translation into it. So the session of the Assembly will for the first time be held in Russian.
