ST. PETERSBURG, JANUARY 27, RIA NOVOSTI - St. Petersburg is commemorating victims of World War II on the 60th anniversary of raising its nazi siege. President Vladimir Putin came to the city on the occasion. He spent a Silence Minute at the Piskarevsky Cemetery eternal fire to mourn blockade victims and soldiers who gave their life in battle for the city.

He joined a group of war veterans and blockade survivors to lay a wreath to the siege memorial, and talked to the seniors. One of them, Victor Antonov by name, turned out to be a neighbour of Anna Sharapova, President Putin's godmother, who died several years ago.

Antonov said she had often talked about her godson, and recollected his school years.

While he was federal Prime Minister, Vladimir Putin visited Sharapova in her home on one of his trips to St. Petersburg. "I missed the occasion - I was out at the time, to my great regret, but now, I have met you, at last," rejoiced Victor Antonov.
