MOSCOW, January 27th, 2004 (RIA Novosti correspondent) - We should make the most of the sports' huge potential and that of prominent sportsmen to fight against the greatest evil of our times - terrorism. This is how Chairman of the Russian State Sports Committee Vyacheslav Fetisov described the main reason for the World Sports Against International Terrorism forum held in Moscow on Tuesday.

"We should understand that people are not born terrorists, some become terrorists," noted Fetisov. "This is why it is especially important for people from different ethnic groups and religions to join hands to show everybody that 'fights' should be waged on sports grounds only, while peace, accord and kindness should reign the rest of our life." According to the chairman of the Sports Committee, "this position is shared by the entire world, including famous sportsmen, thereby the world sports public will answer this call." In his words, the participants in the forum realise that declarations are not enough, they should be supported by real actions. "People are ready to participate in the events that are now being held under the State Sports Committee's aegis. Children suffering from drug addiction and alcoholism should receive special attention, especially if there is nobody to take care of them," said Fetisov.

According to him, today's forum testified that the sports public is fully aware of how important the problem is and is willing to deal with it. "We have all the opportunities for successful implementation of separate programmes for this purpose," he stressed.
