MOSCOW, January 27, 2004 (RIA Novosti) -- The presence of US bases in Central Asia does not threaten Russia, US Secretary of State Colin Powell said at his meeting with representatives of the Russian public in Moscow.

We are staying there to solve common problems of terrorism and drug trafficking, he noted.

According to Powell, it is necessary to give up cold war stereotypes.

We are successfully co-operating with Russia and former Soviet republics in Central Asia, and our presence in this region poses no threat to Russia, the US Secretary of State said.
