MOSCOW, January 27, 2004 (RIA Novosti) -- It is "an open question" as to whether Iraq has weapons of mass destruction (WMD), U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell said in response to questions from Ekho Moskvy radio listeners.

Iraq had a WMD development programme and chemical weapons stocks, so "the question is open," Mr. Powell said.

According to him, a new chief of the U.S. weapons inspectors has been appointed and will go to Iraq to examine the available documents, visit the particular locations and continue searches for weapons of mass destruction.

Former U.S. Weapons Chief Inspector David Kay resigned last week.
