POWELL DEEMS RUSSIA-U.S. COOPERATION TO BE SUCCESSFUL

MOSCOW, January 27, 2004 (RIA Novosti correspondent) - U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell considers the co-operation between Moscow and Washington in settling regional conflicts to be successful.

At his meeting with Russian and American businessmen in Moscow, Mr. Powell said that Russia and the United States had major differences concerning Iraq, but were making headway now. He said Russia and the U.S. must help the Iraqi people overcome difficulties with a view to building democracy together.

He also noted that Russia and the United States worked together to settle other regional conflicts. Russia and the U.S. worked together to settle the North Korean nuclear problem and the Iranian nuclear problem, Mr. Powell said.

Mr. Powell assessed the joint work of Russia and the United States in settling the crisis in relations of India and Pakistan as being successful.

Mr. Powell stressed that he worked closely with his counterpart, Igor Ivanov, on these problems.
