TEHRAN, JANUARY 25 (RIA Novosti correspondent Nikolai Terekhov) - Iran's judicial authorities are contemplating the release of political prisoners and the abolition of death penalty for them, Iranian deputy judiciary chief Mohammad Javad Larijani says in a statement released Sunday.

Iran may abolish the death penalty for political prisoners, and some of those convicted on political charges will likely be set free, Larijani said. He pointed out that Iran was planning the measures to make its court system more open and modern and less politicized, but was not yielding to pressure from international human rights activists, as some Western media alleged.
