MOSCOW, January 22 (RIA Novosti) - Moscow Railway, a branch of the Russian Railways joint stock company, monitored the tourist transportation market and determined priority directions of the tourist routes for 2004.

This year Moscow Railway plans to organize 25 tourist trips on Rus trains from east to west and from Europe to the Far East. The most popular routes are across Russia to China, Mongolia, Central Asia and St Petersburg. Eight trips are planned along the new Volga-Mother route from St Petersburg to Astrakhan (in the Volga estuary of the Caspian Sea).

Unfortunately, Russian tourist agencies do not pay much interest to such trips. However, English and German tourist agencies offer their clients various trips. The UK Steam Trains Lovers Club opens new routes each year, some of which are across Russia. Tourists on comfortable trains travel east across Russia and make stops in large cities in the Urals and Siberia. After they cross the Baikal Lake the transfer to Chinese trains. There are fans of exotic trips. For instance, an English tourist company offers trips to see the tundra in the summer on the Baikal-Amur line.
