The Russian foreign ministry's press and information department reported on Wednesday that Russian deputy permanent representative in the UN Alexander Konuzin, said this at the Security Council session devoted to the illegal trade in small arms.
The embargo on weapons delivery to the zones of conflicts confirms the effectiveness of such measures on the part of the Security Council, the Russian diplomat pointed out. He cited measures, taken with respect to the Taliban regime in Afghanistan as an example.
According to Konuzin, of primary importance is the improvement of mechanisms for monitoring the investigation of embargo violations.
The experience of settling the conflict situations confirms that the illegal trafficking of small arms is directly linked with the activity of illegal armed groups, exploitation of natural resources, involvement of children-soldiers into the conflicts, the mass violation of human rights and the norms of international humanitarian right, and trans-border crime, Konuzin pointed out.
The Russian Federation will continue to participate in solving the problem of illegal trafficking of small arms, the Russian diplomat stressed.
