HIGH LEVEL OF TERRORIST DANGER IN RUSSIA

MOSCOW, January 20 (RIA Novosti) - A high level of terrorist danger is preserved in Russia, Yuri Demidov, the head of the T counter-terrorist center of the main anti-organized crime department of the Russian Interior Ministry, told a briefing on Tuesday.

"Unfortunately, in 2003 Russia saw the growth of terrorism. 561 terrorist acts were registered, 50 percent more than in 2002. As a result of these terrorist acts which have seriously undermined public security and order in the country, the terrorist danger is preserved at a critical level. More than 70 percent of terrorist acts were committed in the Chechen Republic," Demidov stressed.

According to the data of the Interior Ministry, in 2003 over 200 people were killed and more than 600 were injured in terrorist acts.
