GENEVA, January 19, 2004. (RIA Novosti) - President of Ingushetia (a Russian republic bordering on Chechnya) Murat Zyazikov discussed the problem of the returning of forced migrants to Chechnya from Ingushetia with UN High Commissioner for Refugees Ruud Lubbers on Monday in Geneva.

"At this meeting we discussed a selective aid to the Chechen refugees, the ways of intensifying the inner Chechen dialogue and, which is most important, coordination of the activity of the humanitarian missions which are working today in Ingushetia," Murat Zyazikov told RIA Novosti on Monday after the meeting which lasted for more than an hour.

He underscored that "the principle of returning home is voluntary; we do not fix any dates connected with some or other events." The President of Ingushetia has also come to an agreement with Lubbers on holding a special action under the aegis of the United Nations in the North Caucasus aimed at attracting the world community to rendering a more concrete aid to the displaced persons.

"The preparations for the event will take place both in Geneva, Ingushetia and Chechnya. This will be a very great event scheduled for the first quarter of this year," the Ingush President specified.

At this meeting Murat Zyazikov also arranged to organise a visit by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees to Ingushetia in the near future.

According to the official data, there are some 50,000 forced migrants in Ingushetia, 4,500 of them live in tents.
