VLADIVOSTOK, January 17. /RIA Novosti correspondent Veronika Perminova/. The consequences of a violent cyclone in southern Sakhalin, an island in Russia's Far East are being eliminated. The cyclone, which raged on the island for three days, caused unprecedented snowfall.

A monthly norm of snow fell on Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, capital of the Sakhalin region, and the city's Emergency Situations Commission announced that Saturday and Sunday would be working days. The chiefs of industrial facilities and establishments have been instructed to mobilize all efforts and means for clearing the snowdrifts.

The airport in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk is closed for five days now, and big efforts are made to clear its runway.

Strong wind and snowfall damaged power transmission lines in some part of southern Sakhalin, and four settlements were left without electricity. However, power supply has been restored in the morning today.
