TYUMEN, January 16 (RIA NOVOSTI) - Russia's Education Minister Vladimir Filippov said on Friday that for the first time in the history of modern Russia the expenditures on education exceeded the expenditures on the defense industry. He spoke in Tyumen (Siberia) at the All-Russia conference On Improvement and Reform of Economic Relations in the System of Education.

But the number of students and of educational establishments has been diminishing in the country on the whole, Filippov noted.

According to him, the Tyumen Region is a leading region in the sphere of education.

Filippov awarded an honorary medal of Russia's Ministry of Education to the Tyumen Region's governor Sergei Sobyanin for the special achievements. The medal was awarded also to rector of Tyumen State University Gennady Kutsev.
