RUSSIAN REPRESENTATIVE JOINS UN COMMITTEE ON ELIMINATION OF RACIAL DISCRIMINATION

MOSCOW, January 15, 2004. /RIA Novosti/. A Russian representative was included in the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the press and information department of the Russian Foreign Ministry told RIA Novosti on Thursday.

By-elections of 9 out of 18 members of the committee were held in New York yesterday during the 20th meeting of member-states of the International Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Racial Discrimination.

Russian Doctor of Law Alexei Avtonomov was elected to the committee. He took 129 out of 169 possible votes.

Experts from China, India, the USA, the Republic of South Africa, Burkina Faso, Argentina, Guatemala and Ecuador were elected to the committee, as well, the Russian Foreign Ministry said.

"The Russian Federation assigns priority to the activities of the UN Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, in particular, its efforts on the protection of rights and interests of national minorities," the Russian Foreign Ministry added.
