MOSCOW, January 14th, 2004 (RIA Novosti correspondent) - Russian President Vladimir Putin met Daghestani (a North Caucasus republic) leader Magomedali Magomedov in Moscow on Wednesday to discuss the republic's socio-economic development.

Daghestan's economic growth made 10% last year, said Magomedov.

He also stressed that all political events - both regional and national, including the elections - had gone smoothly in the republic.

The leader of Daghestan noted at the meeting that the exploration of the Caspian shelf was not as rapid as expected.

Vladimir Putin in turn asked about the development of the port in Makhachkala (the capital of Daghestan). According to the president, "competition is toughening on the Caspian, and foreign ports are developing very dynamically."
