IN THE WORLD:

- The Day of the Defenders of Lithuanian Freedom (the 13th anniversary of the capture of the TV center in Vilnius by the Soviet troops on January 1-13, 1991; 14 people were killed).

- German physicist Wilhelm WIEN (1864-1928) was born 140 years ago. Works on the black-body radiation. He formulated the laws of displacement and radiation, named after him. Wien is a laureate of the Nobel Prize (1911).

- French ballet dancer and choreographer Roland PETIT was born 80 years ago, in 1924. Art director of Les Ballet Des Champs d'Elysees (1945-1948), the founder (1972) and head of the Marseilles Ballet. Roland Petit staged the ballets "Queen of Spades" and "Notre Dame de Paris" in the Bolshoi Theatre, Moscow.

- The Kazakh State Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre named after Abai opened in Alma Ata 70 years ago, in 1934.

IN RUSSIA:

- The Day of the Russian Press (the Vedomosti newspaper was published in Moscow on January 13, 1703; this holiday was introduced in 1992).

- 285 years ago, in 1719 the Senate sent geodesists Ivan Yevreinov and Fyodor Luzhin "to describe the lands round Kamchatka and to see whether Northeast Asia is connected to America".

- Physician Vasily OBRAZTSOV was born 155 years ago, in 1849. A founder of a scientific school. He gave a classical description of the cardiac infraction.

- The Central Design Bureau headed by Sergei Ilyushin was founded at the Moscow Aviation Plant 71 years ago, in 1933. Well-known attack planes Il-2, Il-8 and Il-16 and passenger aircraft Il-12, Il-14, Il-18, Il-86, Il-96-300 and Il-114 were created here.

- Director and actor Solomon MIKHOELS (Vovsi) (1890-1948) was tragically killed in Minsk 56 years ago. He was a founder and art director of the Moscow State Jewish Theatre. He was well known as a drama actor. Solomon Mikhoels was also the chairman of the Anti-Nazi Jewish Committee.

- The Federation Council of the Federal Assembly (the two-chamber parliament) of the Russian Federation of the first convocation began its work 10 years ago, in 1994. Russian President Boris Yeltsin opened its first meeting.
