UZBEK FOREIGN MINISTER VISITS CHINA

TASHKENT, January 13, 2004 (RIA Novosti correspondent Valery Niyazmatov) -- Uzbek Foreign Minister Sadyk Safayev is starting an official visit to China on Tuesday, January 13th.

The main purpose of the trip is to discuss prospects for the development of Uzbek-Chinese relations and regional and international issues of mutual interest, said Safayev's press secretary Ilkhom Zakirov.

After that, the Uzbek delegation will participate in the opening ceremony of the secretariat of the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO: Russia, Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and China) in Beijing and in an emergency meeting of the Council of SCO Foreign Ministers.

In addition, Beijing will host the presentation of the book "Uzbekistan" published in the Chinese language and written by a group of renowned Chinese experts in Central Asia and by the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences.

According to the press secretary, on Wednesday, January 14, Sadyk Safayev will hold talks with his Chinese counterpart Li Zhaoxing. They are to sign agreements on co-operation and on consultations between the Uzbek and Chinese Foreign Ministries.

On Thursday, January 15, the Uzbek Foreign Minister will participate in an emergency meeting of the Council of SCO Foreign Ministers. After that, the ministers are to meet Chinese President Hu Jintao.
